Multi-course meals

We had numerous multi-course meals in Japan. These were delicious. One day, Misako took us to her favorite restaurant in Tokyo - Innsyoutei in Ueno Park for sukiyaki!

The first course was tofu with tofu soup.

The second course was miso soup with o-fu (a tofu-like product, not made from soybeans).

Some chicken wings for the third course.

Then a raw egg delivered. We Americans steeled ourselves to drink it, but it turns out it was to dip sukiyaki.

The server comes and cooks chicken in oil at a pan at your table.

The chicken then goes in the egg, cooking it. I had to get over my gastronomical reluctance to eat chicken with egg.

After the chicken, tofu skin, onions, tofu and watercress are added to the pot.

Here chicken sausage is added to the pot.

My serving.

A salad (I forget which course we were on).

Then another round of cooking -greens, rice noodles, chicken, tofu.

 My serving.

Another course of egg soup with daikon on the side.

Fortunately dessert was small.  Green tea manju (small soft bean cake).

In Nagano, we were treated to another multi-course meal. We began with edamame, garlic and salmon sashimi.

My personal plate- note the martini-like drink on the side - non alcoholic with a pickled plum.

Soup with bitter melon.

Sashimi with artfully cut radish and carrot.

Beef and dried tomato in shiso sauce.

 Grilled salmon and bamboo.

Two things about this meal: first, they explained we were going to a tempura restaurant so we were not expecting this. Second, we ate it very quickly because we couldn't miss the last train back to Tokyo. We had to skip dessert.
